Nine Muslim militants of Tunisian, Algerian and Syrian origin allegedly linked to the terrorist Al-Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden were arrested, interior minister Mariano Rajoy said. The nine, most of whom were arrested in Madrid, were tasked with recruiting volunteers for training camps run by the Al-Qaeda network, Rajoy said at a news conference in the southern city of Grenada where he was taking part in a Spanish-Italian summit.
Rajoy described the leader of the group as a Spaniard of Syrian origin while the eight others were said to be Tunisian or Algerian.
They are all part of the mujahedeen movement linked to Osama bin Laden, he said.
