Siliguri (WB), Oct 20: Seven operators, including the manager of the ropeway in Darjeeling, who were arrested in connection with yesterday's ropeway collapse killing four persons and injuring 11 others, were rejected bail after they were produced at the SJDM's court in Darjeeling today. Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling, Sanjay Chander said that the manager, S Choudhury, was sent to police remand for two days and the remaining six were sent to judicial custody. The case would come up for hearing on November 4.


The district administration in an order suspended the ropeway service manned by conveyor and ropeway service private limited of Kolkata. The company had taken over the maintenance in Darjeeling in 1998, officials said.

Meanwhile, Chander told reporters that the police had erroneously named Bratati Mandal as one of the killed. She had survived with serious head injury and was now being treated in North Bengal Medical College here.

Minakshi Pratihar was among the four killed.

Chief Medical Officer (health), Darjeeling, T N Chattaraj told reporters that out of the 10 admitted in North Bengal Medical College with serious injuries, the condition of three was stated to be "critical".

The 18-month-old girl, Arpita Paul, who had survived unhurt, was also sent to the NBMCH as her mother, Soma Paul, the CPI councillor of Kharagpur civic board was being treated there, Chattaraj said.
