Meghalaya political parties for status-quo in delimitation
Shillong, July 03: An all-party meeting in Meghalaya today unanimously adopted a resolution on maintaining status-quo about the delimitation of 60 assembly constituencies in the state.
Shillong, July 03: An all-party meeting in Meghalaya today unanimously adopted a resolution on maintaining status-quo about the delimitation of 60 assembly constituencies in the state.
Meghalaya Assembly speaker Martin M Danggo, who convened the conclave, told newsmen, "After a long deliberation, we decided to maintain a status-quo in respect of 36 assembly constituencies in Khasi and Jaintia Hills and 24 in the Garo Hills."
A sub-committee was also formed with BJP state unit president W Kharsiing as its chairman, to assist the five associate members (MLAs of the state) of the Central Delimitation Commission in formulating a point of view before presenting it in Delhi. Representatives of eight political parties - Congress, BJP, NCP, Meghalaya Democratic Party, United Democratic Party, Khun Hynneiwtrep National Awakening Movement, Garo National Council Hill State People's Democratic Party - attended the function besides some independent members. Chief Minister D D Lapang, his deputy Donkupar Roy were among others. Danggo said the members agreed to some sort of "readjustment of constituencies" according to geographical convenience.
