A special CBI court in Mumbai has sentenced a central excise official to two years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 for abusing his official position and causing loss to the department, a CBI release said in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The officer, S Subramanian, had abused his official position while serving as inspector of central excise, Kovilapatti (Chennai) and caused wrongful loss to the tune of Rs 10,05,253 to the central excise department by dishonestly certifying treasury challans, it said.
In another case, the special judge, Chennai sentenced a Rajam, deputy office superintendent of air cargo complex, customs department, Chennai to two years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 6,000 in a case of misapporpriation, the release said.
An investigation established that Rajam had misappropriated a sum of Rs 67,980 towards the sale of proceeds of stamps and Rs 6,236 towards one month salary for distribution to the staff of the cargo complex entrusted to him by the department, it said.
