Malda (WB), Sept 09: The Ganga water was entering through damaged portions of the 8th retired embankment in Kaliachak II block of the flood affected Malda district of North Bengal. Irrigation department control room sources said though the water was entering in Sakuallapur and Chiriatola villages of Kalicahck II block, it would not pose a major threat to the area.

The situation of Sakullapur worsened as the sandbags, kept to check inflow of water through the embankment, were damaged by miscreants.

Work has started to build the ring Bundh in the 500 m stretch, where the irrigation department had been facing resistance from local people, the sources said.

The 1500 m long ring Bundh was a must as the 8th retired embankment has been weakened.

Erosion started at Balutola and adjoining localities of Panchanandapur area where the irrigation department guest house 'Ganga Bhavan' existed before it was washed away by the river.

About 100 families of Gadai area were shifted to the embankment due to rise in Ganga water.
The swelling river has inundated the entire unprotected areas outside the embankment affecting some 25,000 people of five gram panchayats of Manikchak block.
