Washington, Nov 12: Blaming Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for what they call a "quagmire" for the United States in Iraq, a group of Democrats in the US Congress have formally called on President George W Bush to fire him. The resolution introduced Friday in the House of Representatives accuses Rumsfeld of "gross mismanagement of his responsibilities," saying he rejected the advice of senior military officers and sent us troops to war in Iraq without adequate planning and sufficient equipment.
It is unlikely to find much success in Congress, which is controlled by Bush's Republican Party.
Rumsfeld however has become a lightning rod for critics of the administration's war strategy and the Pentagon-led efforts to stabilize and rebuild Iraq. News reports have suggested he might not remain at the Pentagon if Bush is reelected to a second term next year.
