Mumbai, Mar 06: Reliance Infocomm is likely to offer international roaming on its mobile phones soon as all the main vendors LG, Nokia and Samsung have started working on the project to supply a dual-mode handset which would work on the GSM network also. With this, Reliance Infocomm would come on par with GSM in every aspect. "We are working with our vendors, though no specific time frame can be given but we are hoping that within six months we should be able to offer international roaming on our mobile phones", the company's president (wireless products and services) SP Shukla told news agencies.
Out of four features required for international roaming, CDMA handsets are compatible for three aspects like forwarding a call from another network, detailed bill specifying received calls, and dialed minutes of usage and with fourth feature coming in the CDMA handsets would be used across the world.
LG Electronics president Mun Hwa Park said, "LG Electronics is geared up to meet Reliance roadmap and will continue to provide state-of-the-art CDMA handsets".
Reliance officials said that for international roaming the company would be using dual chips in the handsets of which one would be compatible to GSM network and other with CDMA network. With this, the subscriber would be able to use the handset in both types of networks without a change in the number, they added.
