Nagpur, Aug 10: Indefinite curfew has been clamped in Mehkar town in Buldhana district of Maharashtra following police firing after a clash between two communities led to a tense situation last night.
"Three persons were injured when police opened fire in the air to control an unruly mob near a city cinema as members of two communities clash each other over a petty matter," police said here today. The mob indulged in looting spree and set afire shops in the main market area. It also damaged shops at Tahasil Chowk, Balaji Mandir Road and Malipeth.
As many as 40 persons were detained by the police. A tense but quiet situation prevails today in the town even as indefinite curfew was clamped since mid-night, police said.
Top police officers, including IG Police (Amravati Range), have reached Mehkar, police added.
