Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 05: The Kerala government has constituted a panel of medical experts to inquire into the alleged lapses in the treatment provided to former governor Sikander Bakht, who died at the Medical College Hospital here on February 23 following complications arising out of a minor surgery. ''We have already constituted the panel of doctors, but it will be finalised only after a high-level meeting in the presence of Chief Minister A K Antony,'' health minister Kadavoor Sivadasan told newspersons here today.
Asked whether the panel consisted of experts from outside the state as demanded by the state unit of the BJP, the minister said he could not disclose such details right now.
However, according to informed sources, the panel consisted of doctors from outside the state as the government did not want to prolong the controversy, thus resulting in further embarrassment ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The Chief Minister had ordered the probe after serious doubts were expressed on the quality of medical care provided to Bakht. It was the BJP state unit that triggered a controversy by demanding a probe by an outside team of medical experts into the 'mysterious' death of Bakht, one of the senior most Muslim members in the BJP.
Eighty-six-year-old Bakht was admitted to the Medical College Hospital here after he complained of abdominal pain and was operated upon on February 19 to remove an intestinal block. Subsequently, he developed infection and cardiac complications.
