New York, Aug 28: Wimbledon champion Roger Federer advanced on day three of the US Open in New York.
Wimbledon champion Roger Federer made a stuttering start to his U.S. Open campaign on Wednesday (August 27), reaching the second round when feisty Argentine Jose Acasuso succumbed to cramps. The second-seeded Swiss might have expected only minimal resistance from the 75th ranked Acasuso as the claycourter had won just one match since April and suffered first-round defeats in six of his seven previous events. But for a while it was Federer who appeared in danger of making an early exit from the season's final grand slam. Acasuso made him sweat it out on a sweltering centre court before retiring when trailing 5-7 6-3 6-3 2-0. However, there was never a hint of panic from the stylish serve and volleyer. By the time Acasuso threw in the towel, Federer, who is trying to become the first player to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same year since Pete Sampras in 1995, had wrestled control of the contest from the Argentine.

In other action Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis beat Serb qualifier Janko Tipsarevic. 6-2 7-6 6-4.
