Srinagar, May 13: In yet another jolt to Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen, security forces today killed a self-styled battalion commander of the outfit in Jammu and Kashmir where ultras targetted the residence of a CPI(M) leader, official sources said. Battalion commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat was killed by the troops of Rashtriya Rifles in an encounter at Wagoora in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, the sources said.
They said the encounter took place during search operation launched on a specific information in the village. An AK assault rifle and some ammunition were recovered from the deceased.
Bhat, a resident of Kreeri, was the third senior commander of Hizbul Mujahideen shot dead by security forces within a week. On May 6, chief commander operations of the outfit Gazi Shahabuddin was killed and five days later police gunned down the supreme commander of the outfit for Doda Shakeel alias Khateeb Ansari in Srinagar.
The sources said a group of heavily armed militants opened fire on the residence of CPI(M) leader Ali Mohammad Koka at village Bogam in Kulgam area of Anantnag district in south Kashmir last night.
The police guards posted at his residence fired in retaliation forcing the ultras to flee back, the sources said adding none was hurt in the shootout.
They said militants fired a rifle grenade towards a security picket at Sopore township in Baramulla district yesterday.
However, the grenade exploded at a deserted place near a local bank in the town causing no harm, they said.
