Moscow, Nov 23: Mary Pierce helped give France a 2-0 advantage over USA in the Fed Cup women's tennis final.
Mary Pierce outlasted Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3 3-6 8-6 in a baseline battle lasting more than two hours to give France a commanding 2-0 lead over the United States in the Fed Cup final on Saturday (November 22).
Pierce began her match strongly by Shaughnessy came back in the deciding set of the match. A visibly tired Pierce failed to convert three match points in the 12th game of the final set of her match, but the former French and Australian Open champion was finally able to close out the match on her fourth attempt two games later.
Pierce was playing for her country in Fed Cup for the first time since the 1997 final when France beat the Netherlands. The U.S. team, missing several of their top players, now face an uphill struggle in their bid for an 18th Fed Cup title in the reverse singles and doubles rubber on Sunday.
