Three devotees killed, 30 injured, 12 of them seriously
Tirupati, June 04: Three devotees were killed and 38 injured, 12 of them seriously, when a Andhra Pradesh government bus in which they were travelling downhill after offering worship at the famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara, tumbled into a 100 feet gorge at the Old Ghat road of Tirumala in the wee hours of today.
Tirupati, June 04: Three devotees were killed and 38 injured, 12 of them seriously, when a Andhra Pradesh government bus in which they were travelling downhill after offering worship at the famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara, tumbled into a 100 feet gorge at the Old Ghat road of Tirumala in the wee hours of today.
Police said the bus hit a parapet wall near a sharp hair-pin bend and rolled down into the Aveesari valley. The cause of the mishap was being investigated, they said.
This is the second mishap in a week's time. On May 28, 30 pilgrims were injured in an accident at the second Ghat road in the Tirumala Hills.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam executive officer Ajeya Kallam, gave the names of dead passengers of the bus as G Padma (25), Manchiryala, Gangabhavani (14), Jagityala (all from Andhra Pradesh) and Gangulappa (45) of Kolar in Karnataka.
Kallam also announced a solatium of Rs 10,000 each besides Rs 70,000 from Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation insurance, to the families of the deceased.
Free transport arrangements have been made by TTD to carry the bodies to their respective destinations, he said.
He said of the injured, 26 had been discharged, while 12, who sustained serious injuries, were being treated. TTD would extend full assistance to those in hospital in the form of free accommodation, food and medicine during their stay in Tirupati, he said.
