New Delhi, Mar 02: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani today said the incumbency factor is not a liability but an asset for the Vajpayee-led NDA government. Taking to newsmen after unveiling the BJP's Bharat Uday Yatra programme, Mr Advani said in the coming Lok Sabha elections people will vote for stability, continuity and above all performance.
''In 1998 people voted for stability. In 1999, it was for continuity. In the coming elections, they will vote for performance,'' he added.
He said barring Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of independent India, no other Prime Minister had so much acceptability as Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
''When Mr Vajpayee became the Prime Minister in 1999, he was accepted by the people. Now his popularity has gone up nationally and internationally,'' Mr Advani said.
The Congress, he said, had ruled the country for almost five decades. ''During this period, the party had been propagating that no other party or the Nehru family could rule the country. But, Mr Vajpayee proved it otherwise,'' Mr Advani said.
