Patiala, July 20: The executive committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee will meet here today to consider the resignation of Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, stated to be close to senior Akali leader Gurcharan Singh Tohra, who recently resigned from the executive committee to pay the path for his installation as chief of the supreme Sikh body.
SGPC sources said that the special meeting of executive
committee would also discuss the resignation offer made
earlier this week by committee president Kirpal Singh Badungar
as part of a unity formulla worked out recently between Akali
factions led by former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and
Tohra.
Badal had immediately accepted Badungar`s offer and announced that Tohra, who had the longest tenure of 25 years as SGPC president, would be the next chief.
It has become mandatory for Tohra to become an executive committee member first since only the SGPC executive committee member can become the president of the mini parliament of the Sikhs.
The executive committee has 14 members and as per the SGPC Act and additional seat could not be made so Bhaur offered his resignation to pave the way for Tohra`s election as president of the SGPC. Bureau Report
