Kathmandu, July 30: Following the signing of an agreement between India and Nepal here today, New Delhi would provide a grant assistance of about Rs 757 million for the construction of 200-bed emergency and trauma centre at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu.
Indian ambassador to Nepal Shyam Saran and finance secretary Bhanu Prasad Acharya signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments, according to a press release of the Indian Embassy.
This Centre will be set up with Indian grant assistance on about 5157 sq m of land provided by the Nepalese government in the south of the existing National Academy of Medical Sciences or Bir Hospital.
The proposed emergency and trauma centre will be housed in an eight-storey building with two basements, containing state-of-the-art equipment and other facilities, including five major operation theatres, to provide the best possible trauma medical care services to the people of the Himalayan Kingdom, the release added. With this project, a major gap in the health infrastructure in Nepal, namely the lack of a properly equipped medical centre to deal with emergency and trauma cases will be addressed.
Indian assistance has been playing a crucial role in the development of the Bir Hospital, Kathmandu. In 1984-85, a five-storeyed OPD complex with a capacity to accommodate 2,500 out patients, equipped with sophisticated equipment and facilities, was constructed under three grant assistance from Indian government.
A modern nuclear imaging centre was set up in 1987, making this hospital the premier health care institution in Nepal.
The Nepal government has expressed its sincere appreciation to the government of India for its keen interest and continued support in the socio-economic development of Nepal. Bureau Report
