Pune, Nov 21: A court today granted fresh police custody to Samajwadi Janata Party MLA Anil Gote, suspended assistant police inspector Dilip Kamat and Rashid Kulkarni, the counsel for the prime accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket Abdul Karim Telgi. Special judge for Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) S M Shembole remanded Gote and Kulkarni to fresh five-day police custody while Kamat was given two-day police custody.
The special investigating team had sought fresh police custody on the grounds that the 56 Telgi tapes submitted by the Karnataka government contained phone conversations between Telgi and other accused.
The SIT wanted interrogation of the accused in the police custody rather than jail to prevent leakage of sensitive information of the tapes to others.
Gote was the first legislator to be arrested in the scam on June 30 last under the stringent MCOCA law and was remanded to police custody from time to time.
Kamat, attached to Mumbai Crime Branch, was arrested on June 13 while Rashid Kulkarni was arrested on August 06. They were remanded to police custody from time-to-time.
