Mumbai, Nov 20: Armed with a special court's order, crime branch sleuths today raided the premises of inspector Daya Nayak following a complaint filed by a city scribe alleging nexus between policemen and underworld. The raid was conducted soon after designated judge A P Bhangale ordered ACP Shankar Kamble to conduct an inquiry into the allegations made by Ketan Tirodkar alleging police- underworld nexus. The court also empowered ACP Kamble to form his own team for the purpose and raid the premises of inspector Daya Nayak, Mrinalini Patil, director of Hindi film "Kaagar" and builder R C Agarwal, against whom Tirodkar had made serious allegations. ACP Kamble told the court that on a High Court directive, he had earlier conducted an inquiry into the allegations made by Tirodkar in a complaint. However, it was discontinued midway because his seniors had stalled the probe.
The judge, however, ordered him to continue with the inquiry independently and file a report to the court.

In police circles, Nayak is popularly known as an encounter specialist as he has shot dead nearly 70 gangsters.

The judge had earlier summoned eight witnesses to depose but only one of them, Tejpal Singh, turned up today. He informed the court that he was formerly an employee of builder Agarwal and had dispute with him in the 1980s. He had received threats and had lodged police complaint, Tejpal said.

Two other witnesses, Arvind Inamdar, former director general of police, and inspector Pradeep Sharma, wrote letters to the judge saying they were not able to appear today for personal reasons.
