New Delhi, Nov 15: CBI today arrested an inspector of Uttar Pradesh Police department in Lucknow this morning for alleged "suppression of evidence and illegal confinement of people" in the Madhumita Shukla murder case. Inspector Yagya Narain Dikshit, who was out of the city, was questioned soon after his return in the wee hours of the day, the CBI sources said.
He was placed under arrest after he failed to reply convincingly to questions.
The CBI alleged that Dikshit had detained some persons illegally, including an engineering student while trying to project the 24-year-old poetess as the student`s wife.
To substantiate his claims of marriage, the inspector had also reportedly recorded the statement of a priest, the CBI alleged.
However, after the case was handed over to the CBI, the student and the priest told the agency sleuths that Dikshit had allegedly forced them to make false statements, the sources said.
After arresting Prakash Chander Pandey, alleged killer of Madhumita, the CBI`s focus in the case has shifted to those involved in conspiracy and suppression of evidence.
Meanwhile, another accused in the murder Rohit Chaturvedi, has been brought to Delhi for a lie detector test.
