Kolkata, June 05: The suspended Coal India Ltd chairman-cum-managing director, N K Sharma, said today he was innocent and hinted that he was being made a scapegoat.
"I have not committed anything wrong," Sharma said when approached for his comments on his suspension but refused to say anything more saying, "I have not yet received the memorandum. Let the memorandum come I am ready to give all replies in detail".
On further queries, Sharma indicated that he was being made a "scapegoat" for something that he had not done.
"Being chairman of an organisation like Coal India, I had to deal with a number of people and also a number of people were working under me. So how can I be held responsible for any particular decision that might have been taken by others?" he said.
Sharma was suspended by the Central government on corruption charges and abuse of official position. The main allegation against him was that he had favoured a certain party while opening a tender for a job.
Meanwhile, several employees at CIL headquarters in central Kolkata expressed sadness today after learning about Sharma's suspension.
Incidentally, the order had come to CIL headquarters last afternoon itself, but very few people knew about it. Sharma, however, was aware about the order yesterday itself and so he did not come to office today.
While most of the employees preferred to keep mum when asked about their reaction on suspension of the their chairman, a few, however, came out in defence of Sharma.
