New Delhi, July 03: A day after describing the acquittal of all the 21 accused in the best bakery case in Gujarat as a "miscarriage of justice", the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today decided to send a three-member team to Vadodara to "inspect the records of the case and examine the judgement".
"We have given orders and NHRC will send a team headed by registrar general Ajit Bharihoke to Vadodara to see the judgement and inspect the records of the case and asked it to submit a report within a week," NHRC chairman Justice A S Anand told.
Sources said the commission would decide on its future course of action after it gets the report.
"Keeping in view the seriousness of the issue involved in the order of acquittal in the Best Bakery case, the commission considers it appropriate to immediately depute a team to proceed to Vadodara,” he said.
The other members of the team are Sudhir Chowdhary, DIG (investigation) and P G J Nampoothiri, special rapporteur in the NHRC, he said, adding the team may associate any local lawyer for its assistance in consultation with the special rapporteur.
"As far as NHRC is concerned, we will give all assistance to whoever wants it,” he said in reply to a question on his suggestion that the state government should appeal against the special court`s verdict.
"It is an opportunity to the Gujarat government to re-establish its credibility,” he added.
