London, June 09: Manchester United's admission that clubs from Spain and Italy have made positive moves to sign England captain David Beckham sparked more speculation yesterday that he's played his last game for the Reds.
That decision seems down to the club and the player, but the papers were convinced his was on the move. Yet they couldn't decide where he was going.
Barcelona has been the front runner in recent days with Joan Laporta, a candidate for the club presidency, promising to hire the England captain if he's elected.
But Manchester United's admission in a statement on Saturday that several clubs were in regular and close contact with them has rekindled the interest of Real Madrid, Inter Milan and newly crowned Champions Cup titlist AC Milan.
United will want at least 30 million pounds (US$48 million) for Beckham, who has been at the club for 13 seasons, and that sort of cash limits the number of candidates.
According to the Mail On Sunday, Madrid will emerge as the top contender having spent that sort of money on Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo in recent years.
Another of the tabloids, The News Of The World, suggested that Beckham wants to go to AC Milan if he has to leave Old Trafford and suggested that the Italian club, which might not be able to afford the full amount, could offer Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko in part exchange.
