Chennai, Aug 29: Attempting to set at rest the speculation about the airworthiness of MiG 21 aircraft, Air Chief Marshal Krishnaswamy today said it was unfair "to brand the aircraft as unsafe". Talking to reporters here at the Tamil Nadu secretariat after a meeting with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, he said the accidents involving MiG 21s "has nothing to do with the aircraft basically".
A tremendous amount of skill was required to fly the old technology, MiG 21, he said. About 70 per cent of the country's fighter aircraft were MiGs, he pointed out. Referring to Tamil Nadu's representation in the Indian Air Force, he said it was proportionately less and attributed it to the people's lack of knowledge about the force. It was about three per cent less than what it should have been. Many were not even aware that IAF had its personnel stationed in many parts of the world like in the Middle East and the USA. He said Air Force personnel stationed in various parts of the country were given all facilities to regularly visit their families.
Krishnaswamy said the Chief Minister had agreed to his invitation to be the chief guest at the airshow here on September 6. The airshow would go a long way in highlighting the activities of the IAF to people of Tamil Nadu. Bureau Report
