Naivasha (Kenya), Oct 22: U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said today that the Sudanese government and rebels fighting a 20-year civil war have committed themselves
to reaching a comprehensive peace deal by the end of December.
"We must find a solution. This is a moment of
opportunity that must not be lost," Powell told reporters
after meeting with mediators and Sudanese government and
rebel officials.
"The people of Sudan have known hardship and devastation for too long ... It's time now for the leaders assembled here to complete the final stages of this marathon," he said.
Flanked by Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Mohammed Taha and rebel leader John Garang, Powell committed the United States to helping implement a final agreement.
"Once the parties have signed the final comprehensive agreement for peace (U.S.) President (George W.) Bush looks forward and has invited them to come to the White House so that he can recognise their achievements and also endorse the agreement," he said.
