Kerala has rejected a proposal from the National Water Development Authority (NWDA) on diversion of water from Achankovil and Pamba rivers to Tamil Nadu's Mekkara dam, chief minister A K Antony Thursday informed the state assembly. He was replying to a calling attention by Adoor Prakash (Cong) on the reported move of Tamil Nadu to construct a dam at Mekkara, near Shencottah, as part of the Adavi Nainar reservoir project diverting headwaters of the Achankovil and Pamba.
The state had rejected the NWDA proposal to carry water from Achankovil and Pamba through a tunnel to the Mekkkara dam across the Hanuman river in Tamil Nadu, he said. The state, however, could not intervene and stop the work as it was taking place on the Tamil Nadu side of the border. Nearly 75 per cent of the one-km long dam work was to be over, he said.
Kerala had also rejected Tamil Nadu's demand for conducting survey on the Kerala side for the proposed Giriyar project, he said.
