Bangalore, Sept 29: The ruling Congress and the All India Progressive Janata Dal today retained the Hungund and Vemagal Assembly constituency seats respectively, the by-elections for which were held last week. It was a mixed bag of luck for congress as it won Hungund with its candidate Gouramma, wife of former Minister S R Kashappanavar, being elected while defeating BJP rival M S Patil by a margin of 10,299 votes.

Kashappanavar's death necessitated the Hungund by-election.

In Vemagal, AIPJD asserted its strength when its candidate Krishna Byregowda, son of C Byregowda, who was the party state unit president and whose death caused the by-election, triumphed over Congress's Venkatamuniyappa by an impressive margin of 11,283 votes. Byregowda had represented Vemagal for six successive terms.

The bypoll was held on September 26 and the votes were counted today amid tight security.
