Kuala Lumpur, Dec 29: Malaysian authorities have deported 53 Chinese tourists from Xiamen on suspicion of trying to smuggle in Chinese-made goods, a report said today. Mohamad Amin, immigration chief at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, said officers became suspicious when the tourists arrived yesterday with a large number of bags.
They told immigration the items were souvenirs, but it later transpired that their intention was to sell the products in Malaysia, he said.
The goods in their possession included pieces of cloth, garments and electronic items.
"We have been observing passengers at the arrival hall. Suspecting something was amiss, we set up a special squad with 20 personnel to investigate," Mohamad was quoted as saying by a newspaper.
"The squad detained 53 Chinese nationals at the baggage claims area in the airport," Mohamad added.
He added the tourists were later deported together with their goods. Bureau Report
