A US-based cell of the al Qaeda terror network nearly launched an attack on a major target in Washington shortly after September 11.
An al Qaeda "sleeper cell" was poised to attack the Capitol building, which houses both the US Congress and Senate, 'Newsweek' magazine reported quoting intelligence sources. They believed that the FBI, in its sweep against visa violators, picked up members of a "support cell" tasked with providing logistic help to the people who would have actually carried out the mission.
The would-be terrorists then went underground or fled the country, they said.
Investigators have not been able to identify the plotters from among the hundreds of people caught in the FBI dragnet and are unsure whether they are still in custody, the magazine reported. Bureau Report
