New Delhi, Dec 18: The only upset was caused by Chandigarh's Sanam Singh, who came back from a one-set deficit to oust fourth seed Ajay Ramaswami (Mah) and make it to the quarter-finals.
Sanam lost the first set 2-6, but put in tremendous effort to take the second to a tie-breaker, where he held on to his nerves to win 7-6(4). A sapped Ramaswami had no answer to the fine play of the young Chandigarh lad, who took the final set 6-4 to seal the match.
In another match, seventh seed Somdev Dev Varman (TN) beat Punjab's Gursharan Singh 6-3, 6-1.
Varman's statemate Kamala Kannan, seeded eighth, beat Amod Wakalkar 6-4, 6-3, while Delhi's Gurmehar Singh overcame Parantap Chaturvedi 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Divij Sharan (Delhi) accounted for Tushar Liberhan of Chandigarh in another three setter 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
