Srinagar, Nov 02: In a daring act, village defence committee (VDC) members repulsed an attack by militants at Gool Arnas in Udhampur even as eight people, including six ultras and a jawan, were killed elsewhere in the state in militancy-related incidents since last night, an official spokesman said here today.
Militants swooped on a village in Arnas area last night and started firing indiscriminately, he said adding the VDC members immediately took up positions and fired back.
The exchange of fire between the two sides continued for nearly two hours. Police later rushed to the scene and helped them in warding off the attack.
A Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant identified as Abu Aman was killed in an encounter with security forces at Tikya Chewa in Anantnag district today, the spokesman said adding arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain ultra.
Another LeT ultra, Imtiyaz Ahmad Wani alias Seba, was gunned down in an encounter with security forces at Brari Angan of the district, he said.
A militant, Abdul Rehman alias Sajad of Muzaffarabad in PoK, was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Chadoora area of Budgam district last night, he said.
The spokesman quoting a delayed report said a security personnel was killed in a gunbattle with a group of infiltrating militants at Lanjote, Balkote in Poonch district on the night of October 30.
