New Delhi, Apr 29: The CBSE Pre-Medical Test (PMT) case today took a curious turn when a Delhi police officer investigating it was arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs two lakh from the kin of the main accused. Acting on a complaint from the father of main accused Ranjit Verma, the CBI laid a trap and arrested sub-inspector Sanjay Gupta, an investigating officer in the CBSE-PMT case from Delhi police's crime branch, while allegedly accepting Rs two lakh, as the first installment of the bribe.
A CBI spokesman said the accused police official had been threatening the family members of Verma, a fourth year medical student, to pay a bribe of Rs 20 lakh or else he would implicate the entire family in the case.
The complaint said on a request of Verma's father, Gupta reduced the bribe amount to Rs 6.5 lakh and assured the complainant that he would not arrest him besides promising other "official favours", the spokesman said.
The CBI laid a trap and arrested Gupta while he was allegedly accepting the bribe amount in his crime branch office in Dev Nagar, Karol Bagh. The complainant had alleged that the accused officer had been harrassing him by calling him to police station every day besides summoning his wife.
Following Gupta's arrest, the CBI carried out raids at his official and residential premises, he said.
The complainant alleged that the police official was threatening that he would be naming the entire family in the FIR, the CBI spokesman said.
Verma along with Satinder had suddenly surrendered before a city court on April 21 after the Delhi police had named him in the FIR as one of the main accused.
Delhi police crime branch had on April 10, detected the leakage of question papers of the All India Pre Medical Test conducted by CBSE, hours before nearly 2.4 lakh students were to appear in the prestigious examination.
The Delhi police had so far arrested over 10 people in this connection.
