Colombo, June 27: Sri Lankan president Chandrika
Kumaratunga's party today warned that the country will slip
back to war within two weeks as the Tamil rebels were planning
a major attack in the eastern province.
"We warn the government that the LTTE is preparing for an attack in the eastern province in the next two weeks", Sarath Amunugama, the spokesman of the people's alliance told reporters here.
He appealed to the government of prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to take the party's warning seriously and take precautionary measures.
Amunugama also claimed that security forces were ill prepared to meet any LTTE threat in violation of the Norwegian-arranged ceasefire that is in place since February 3 last year.
He said they had information from their own party organisation in the multi-ethnic eastern region about the impending assault that could end the fragile truce.
Amunugama declined to say what the target of the attack would be. "I do not want to elaborate", he said.
Kumaratunga, who is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, believes that troops have ammunition to last them only 10 days in the event of a major rebel onslaught.
