Kolkata, Nov 17: The Calcutta High Court today directed the authorities to ensure supply of bacteria-free potable water for spectators at the Eden Gardens, the venue of tomorrow's cricket tri-series final between India and Australia.

Hearing a petition by advocate Idris Ali on the basis of a report in a vernacular daily here that bacteria was found in drinking water at the Eden Gardens, a division bench comprising Justice D K Seth and Justice R N Sinha directed that steps be taken well ahead of any match at the stadium in future to provide clean and bacteria free water.
The bench also directed the stadium authorities to test potable water at the Eden at least a fortnight before such a cricket match and to monitor its quality.
The petition was based on a newspaper report published three days ago claiming that public health engineering department had found bacteria in the water at the Eden Gardens.
Mayor Subrata Mukherjee, however, said that the water had already been properly tested and found to be clean and bacteria free.
At least one lakh spectators were expected to throng the Eden Gardens for the cricket match tomorrow.
