New Delhi, Feb 27: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to Union Government on a petition challenging appointment of former CBI Director PC Sharma as member of the National Human Rights Commission.
A bench headed by Justice S Rajendra Babu also issued notice to Sharma on the petition filed by People's Union of Civil Liberties.
The petition said Sharma, who was the Director of CBI, was not qualified to be appointed as member of NHRC, as the human rights body is often called upon to decide on complaints of violation of fundamental rights by CBI.
The petitioner said Sharma's appointment to NHRC could destroy the independence of the apex human right institution and was violative of India's commitment to the United Nations.
