Kolkata, Nov 13: Outstanding parliamentarian and veteran Communist leader Dr Ranen Sen who died here today was one of the founder members of the "Calcutta group" of the Communist Party which had been recognised by the Communist international for its exemplary role among workers. Born in a highly educated family of late Jiten Sen in 1909, Sen had his schooling at Mitra institution, attended Ashutosh College and took his Medical Degree from National Medical College in the city.

Having begun his political career as a member of Jugantar group, a revolutionary party under the leadership of Bipin Behari Ganguly and Jyotish Ghosh from 1924 to 1927, he came in close contact with Bhupendra Nath Dutta, younger brother of Swami Vivekananda and started studying Marxist literature. He joined the Communist movement in 1928 and since then he attended the classes taken by Philips and Bhupendra Nath Dutta.

In 1930, Sen together with Somnath Lahiri, a renowned figure in the undivided the CPI, and others formed the much discussed "Calcutta group of the Communist Party. This group sent a letter to the Communist International in Moscow in 1932 which recognised the contribution of Calcutta group for its work mainly among the workers and spreading the teachings of Marx and Lenin among the workers.
