Coimbatore, June 27: Tamil Nadu unit of the CPI(M) today urged the Karnataka government to release water from the Cauvery and safeguard the interests of Tamil Nadu farmers who have been severely affected due to the prevailing drought conditions. Despite increased inflow in the Kabini, Karnataka's refusal and 'adamant attitude' to release water to Delta farmers of Tamil Nadu, was 'really shocking,' party secretary N Varadharajan told at a press conference here. Briefing reporters on the deliberations of the three-day party state committee meeting, which concluded here today, he said that Tamil Nadu farmers, who lost two crops last year, were solely dependent on Cauvery water to save this year's crop.

He said the meeting had passed a resolution, urging the government to exert pressure on the Centre to convene a meeting of the Cauvery tribunal for adequate water release.


Stating that the Cauvery issue was being 'politicised' for many decades, he said it would be better for both governments, in the larger interests of the farmers, to arrive at a lasting solution.

On the fresh proposals by Kanchi Seer to solve the Ayodhya issue, he said the CPI(M) had made it clear that the Supreme Court verdict should be final. Even if both parties agreed to the proposals, it should be submitted and have the 'sanction' of the apex court, Varadharajan said. On the possibility of a third front being formed, he said the CPI(M) would not close its eyes if it came about. However, they would not extend support to merely follow the 'same policies' pursued by various governments, he said. Bureau Report
