Baghdad, Oct 13: Iraqi oil minister Ibrahim Bahr al-Uloom and an aide to Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi escaped an assassination attempt in Baghdad hours after a deadly bombing in the capital, a council source said today. "Bahr al-Uloom and Nabil al-Musawi, Chalabi's deputy on the Governing Council, escaped an assassination attempt in the Mansur district at around 7:30 pm (2200 IST) yesterday," the source told news agencies, requesting anonymity.

"The two men were traveling in the same car in a five-vehicle convoy when the motorcade came under fire from a speeding car," he said.

Bodyguards in the convoy opened fire on the attacking car, in which three men armed with Kalashnikovs were traveling, but the car sped away.
Bahr al-Uloom is a member of the interim cabinet appointed by the Governing Council, while Musawi sits in for Chalabi in the 25-member transitional council, which was installed by the US-led administration in July.

No one was injured in the incident, which came amid mounting attacks on Iraqis working with the us-led coalition. Governing Council member Akila al-Hashimi was gunned down on September 20, and a car bombing that left at least six people dead in Baghdad yesterday occurred outside a hotel used by council members, as well as by us security personnel.

The governor of Diyala province northeast of Baghdad also escaped an attempt on his life today when a roadside bomb exploded as he traveled to work, a local police officer said.
