London, May 28: The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, met with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and with Prince Charles but not with Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The foreign office said the Dalai Lama and Straw discussed Tibet when they met yesterday at the minister's office in the House of Commons. But a spokesman declined to provide further details. Blair has faced criticism for failing to meet the Dalai Lama during his visit to Britain. In the House of Commons on Wednesday, a legislator asked Blair if the Chinese government had told him not to meet with the Dalai Lama. Blair said no, adding that he had met with the spiritual leader before and would be "very happy" to do so again, on a day when his schedule was less busy. China has ruled Tibet with an iron first since its troops occupied the territory in 1951. Today people in Tibet still can be arrested for even possessing a photo of the Dalai Lama, a Nobel peace prize winner who is peacefully pressing for Tibetan autonomy. The Dalai Lama lives in Dharamsala, India.

Last night, he met with Prince Charles during a reception at his Clarence House residence in London that included traditional Tibetan musicians playing in his honour.

The prince has long been an admirer of the Dalai Lama and is said to be concerned about the situation in Tibet.
