Pune, Oct 15: Dengue has claimed seven more lives in Maharashtra taking the toll to nine in the last one month, official sources said. The disease has claimed four lives in the city and three in Pimpri-Chinchwad area in the past few days, the sources said adding a number of people in these area are affected.
R Gadia, consultant physician and chief investigator at the Dengue Research Project at KEM Hospital here told reporters that of the 150 people who have tested positive for dengue, 120 are from Pune. In KEM alone, three deaths due to dengue have been reported in the last few days, he added.
Expressing concern over sudden rise of the disease, Gadia said unless concerted steps are taken it may become an epidemic by May or June next year.
Stating that this year number of dengue cases was much higher, he said dengue patients were also coming in from Baramati, Junnar, Ahmednagar, Shrigonda and Daund regions.
Nagkumar R Kunachi, Health Officer Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation while confirming three deaths in area because of dengue, said in all 130 people have been affected.
He said though the corporation was undertaking fumigation and other necessary measures, the best thing was to prevent breeding of Aedes mosquitoes in stagnant water.
Gadia said the Muncipal Corporations should create awareness among people on how it spreads.
