Bhubaneswar, Sept 19: Two Janata Dal(S) youth leaders, who were among the pro-bandh supporters taken into custody today, were allegedly assaulted by some BJD supporters in a temporary police lock-up here.
According to a JD(S) press release, Jugal Kishore Nayak, president of the party's youth wing and Amiya Pandav, its students wing chief, were beaten up by BJD supporters who had also been kept there after being picked up by police in connection with today's bandh. The ruling partymen also burnt the JD(S) flag carried by them, the release alleged. Although everything happened in presence of the police, they preferred to remain mute spectators, it claimed.
While official sources could not confirm the assault charge, police later shifted the two JD(S) leaders to a local police station.
Although both BJD and JD(S) were supporting the Orissa bandh, Nayak and Pandav in a statement two days back had questioned the bona fides of the regional outfit to the cause of the bandh.
They had asked the BJD leadership to withdraw its two ministers from the nda government if the party was serious in its opposition to privatisation of NALCO, the issue on which today's bandh had been called.
