Dhaka, May 11: Donors attending annual meeting of the World Bank coordinated Bangladesh Development Forum today criticised the poor state of law and order, low level of governance and absence of security in the country and threatened to reduce or withdraw their contributions. World Bank regional chief Praful C Patel said unless law and order situation improved, corruption contained and good governance ensured, the donors would not raise their contribution.

Some donors threatened to reduce, while other warned to withdraw their contributions if the situation did not improve, Patel told a press conference after the three-day meeting of the representatives of 32 countries, where issues troubling Bangladesh, including post MFA regime and the strategy on poverty alleviation, were discussed.

While criticising ruling BNP government for the law and order situation in the country, they assured to provide funds to fight poverty and take up economic reform measures.

The government, however, said it could not allow any interference in country's internal affairs and it was "accountable only to the people and the parliament, not the donors", according to meeting sources.

While inaugurating the meeting on Saturday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia sought support of development partners to carry forward poverty reduction initiatives.

The BDF meeting, held here for the fourth time in a row, reviewed performance of Bangladesh in different fields.
