Coochbehar (WB), Apr 12: At least 60 people were injured and 400 others left homeless in a cyclonic storm that lashed Mekhliganj and surrounding areas of Coochbehar district of West Bengal last night. Of the injured, 16 were admitted to Mekhliganj sub-divisional hospital, where the condition of six including a child was critical, official sources said.
The storm damaged a number of houses, leaving around 400 people homeless, the sources said. The affected areas included Mekhliganj, Haldibari, Fukaldabri, Nijtaraf, Kasiabari, Bholarhat and Beltali.
Many localities in the affected areas have been without electricity since last night. Additional district magistrate (development) Onkar Singh Meena said relief work has begun and a medical team has been sent to the affected area.
Meena said he has asked state relief secretary Nikilesh Das to send more relief material to the district. Bureau Report
