Report: Rahul Agarwal As you make your way through the lanes and bylanes Uttaranchal`s holy city of Haridwar, one can hear people talking in hushed tones about the mysterious disappearance of city Superintendent of Police Dhoom Singh Tomar. It has been 30 days since Tomar left for a walk along the banks of the holy River Ganges never to return back, and the police is still nowhere near resolving the mystery. Was he abducted? Did he go into hibernation on his own? These are questions that have left even the khaki clad topbrasses puzzled. The general public too has started doubting its security. According to Haridwar Police Chief Ashok Kumar, Tomar left for his routine walk on September 23 at 7:30 pm and never returned. The FIR lodged by his wife Sushila Tomar in Kotwali police station of Haridwar district states that Tomar left his official residence for a evening walk to the bank of holy Ganges. He has still not returned. The police, however, recovered his shoes and spectacles near the river. Tomar , who lives in Dehradun , joined the Police force as a Deputy Superintendent of Police twenty years ago. He was posted in different parts of states during his tenure and accomplished several important tasks. He recently finished an undercover narcotics assignment, which warmed him to many hearts. When this honest and sincere police officer disappeared, the news spread like wildfire in the small town. By midnight, a police team headed by senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar had launched a manhunt for Tomar. They searched every possible place where he could be, but to no avail. A specially trained police team of swimmers were also pressed into action to search the Ganges. Many question loom…many explanations offered to explain the intriguing disappearance. Inspector General of Police, L.P Misra , says that some family problem might have caused Tomar to leave his home. He doesn’t rule out the possibility of suicide. However, Tomar`s wife and son, Utkarsh, disagree vehemently with the IG`s statement. Talking to our correspondent, Sushila reveals that she has lodged the FIR of abduction as she firmly believes her husband has been kidnapped. She alleges that the police officials are not taking this matter seriously enough . The story of the missing officer might make for a thrilling tale. But the fact that even after a month the police is unable to track Tomar, speaks volume of the complexity of the case, which is one of its kind in the recent history.
