Colombo, Aug 01: Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga has asked her rival and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to clarify his interim power sharing proposals which has granted greater political and financial powers to the Tigers. In a letter addressed to the PM, the Sri Lankan President says, "I was shocked and surprised to learn that the proposals you sent me were at variance to those submitted by you to the LTTE."
"I shall be available to discuss your proposals on the interim administration and any other matters relating to the LTTE when you have decided to inform me of the correct proposals submitted by you to the LTTE," Kumaratunga said in the letter. Kumaratunga's People's Alliance (PA) last week accused Wickremesinghe of misleading the President by submitting a different set of proposals than the one forwarded to the LTTE for their consideration.
The government spokesman G L Peiris in response to the PA accusations said the issue was "a storm in a tea cup" and that the government had not misled the President. Dispute over the proposals handed over to LTTE is the latest dispute in uneasy political cohabitation between Wickremesignhe's United National Front government controlling the legislative assembly and Kumaratunga's main opposition parliamentary party holding the executive presidency.
