Kolkata, Jan 10: With five lakh pilgrims expected at this year's Ganga Sagar Mela for the holy dip on January 13, the West Bengal government has left nothing to chance after the attacks on Akshardham Temple in Gujarat and the Shiva Temple in Jammu last year by Pakistan-backed terrorists.
In addition to the armed police, coast guard and navy aircraft, hovercrafts and vessels would keep a close eye on the movement of people through land and water routes to the fair site on Sagar island, about 130 km from the metropolis, South 24 Parganas District Magistrate Alapan Bandyopadhyay said here today. He said that five lakh pilgrims were expected to take the holy dip on Makar Sankranti falling on January 13 and 14.

Police, in plain clothes, would mingle with pilgrims, while metal detectors and a communication system have been installed keeping the security of the pilgrims from the four corners of the country in mind, Bandyopadhyay said.
Taking a lesson from last year's stampede-like situation and massive traffic snarls a rs eight crore project for upgradation and widening of roads and other infrastructure for unhindered movement of pilgrims has been completed, he said.
