New Delhi, Aug 14: Continuing with the Prime Minister's peace initiative and as a gesture of cooperation, India today offered assistance to Pakistan to deal with the environmental hazards created by the oil spill off the Karachi Port. ''Should the government of Pakistan respond positively, the Government of India would provide immediate cooperation through its capabilities, equipment and materials, including pollution response equipment, dispersants and containment booms,'' an External Affairs Ministry spokesman told reporters here. He said the assistance offer was conveyed to the Pakistan government by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. ''We have not heard back from the Pakistan government so far,'' he added. News reports said a Greek-registered oil tanker that ran aground off the Karachi coast had developed cracks in its hull and was threatening to break apart and spill tonnes of oil in the rich fishing waters.
