Mumbai, Jun 01: Extortions in the commercial capital of the country have dipped significantly with the police cracking down on major extortionists here coupled with strict enforcement of MPDA and MCOC Act. The metropolis, which till recently was caught in the clutches of the extortion mafia with nearly 70 cases being reported last year, has begun experiencing a respite following elimination of major gangs involved in the extortion racket, police said.

The number has dipped to around 15 cases this year with the strict enforcement of the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act and the Maharashtra Control for Organised Crime Act, police added.

With the major underworld dons like Dawood and Chhota Shakeel no longer being involved with extortion and gangsters like Abu Salem under fire in Portugal, the extortion scene in Mumbai has cooled down, sources said. The reported death of Ejas Lakdawala has also added a major blow.

The main beneficiary of the elimination of extortionist has been the Indian film industry, which had become a soft target for the underworld. The Bharat Shah case which exposed the unholy nexus between the film industry and the underworld also helped in curbing the extortion menace, sources added.
