Kochi, June 24: Nearly a year after the death of Swami Saswathikananda, former head of the Sivagiri Mutt, in mysterious circumstances, his family members have approached the Kerala High Court, seeking either a "free and fair enquiry" or a CBI probe into his death by drowning at nearby Aluva on July one last year. When the petition by the late swami's mother, N Kausalya, brother C Vijaykumar, sister K Santhakumari and Swami Sivanandagiri, came up before Justice G Shashidharan, he adjourned the petition to June 30 and directed the government to inform its stand.

The petitioners sought directions to the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and DGP to conduct a "free and fair" investigation into the cause of the swami's death or handover the investigation to CBI. The investigation by the state police was not satisfactory, they submitted.
