Kohima, Feb 06: Alarmed by the outbreak of bird flu in several South-East Asian countries, the Nagaland government today announced an immediate ban on import of poultry products into the state and constituted a State Level Animal Disease Emergency Committee (SADEC). The ban on poultry products includes domestic and wild birds and turkey poultry.
The state government also banned import of other newly hatched avian species and pathological material and biological products (from birds) which have not been processed to ensure destruction of avian influenza (fowl plague) virus from the worst-hit countries like Korea, Vietnam and Japan.

The committee was constituted to ensure that all precautionary measures were taken against the deadly bird flu, which has spread from South East Asia to as far as Pakistan and china, the sources said. Other steps like conducting awareness campaign among the poultry farmers and village functionaries regarding the various poultry diseases would to be taken for strict monitoring and surveillance of the poultry diseases.
At the district level, Animal Disease Emergency Committee (DADEC) was also constituted, which would be headed by the deputy commissioner as the chairman, while the district veterinary officer would be the member secretary.
Meanwhile, despite the scare in many parts of the country, chicken and egg consumption in Nagaland has not come down and poultry products supply from other states to Nagaland continued.
