Agartala, July 31: Tripura tribal areas autonomous district council, where the ruling indigenous nationalist party of Tripura had become a minority, was today dissolved after a no-confidence motion against it was passed by voice vote.
Radhacharan Debbarma (CPI-M), the Leader of the Opposition moved the motion at the beginning of a special session of the council, which controls two-thirds of the territory of Tripura and where one-third of the tribal population reside.
The motion said that development work in tribal council areas had stopped because of corruption by executive members, including chief executive member Debabrata Koloi.
He also alleged that the INPT was hobnobbing with insurgents of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and siphoned off to them a large chunk of the council budget.
Koloi, who belongs to INPT, said that the no-confidence motion against him and his administration was 'unconstitutional' because the current chairman, Hirendra Kumar Tripura, had 'no right' to convene the special session as he had been removed from his post by his party.
He said that the executive body was not apprised about the no-confidence motion which was mandatory under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
The treasury bench comprising 11 members led by Koloi then walked out of the house opposing the motion.
